Character analysis: ‘Beauty’

The following post is based on the play Beauty written by Jane Martin. The post comprises of the character Carla who is featured alongside Bethany. Based on how Carla has conducted herself throughout the play, one gets a vivid picture of her character. She is featured as an envious and a discontented person. Throughout the play, Clara envies Bethany. Although she is beautiful, she wishes to be smart like Bethany and to live a life hers. For instance Carla explains to Bethany that; ‘you’ve had three long term relationships and you’re only twenty-three I haven’t had one.’ She wishes to have good relationships like Bethany. The author has also used language to reveal her emotional state of being envious and discontented.

Carla tells Bethany, “You have personality…. Smart guys like you” (Martin, 2016). This shows how she envious of Carla as well as how she is discontented with her life. However, Bethany’s point of view displays her and a beautiful lady who has a lot although she does not see it. In the end the two characters transform through the help of a genie. However, the desire of the two characters is not satisfied since, at one point, Carla says that “I wanted to be smart, but I didn’t want to be you.” This post which has been published at online class help provides insighful feedback based on how to conduct character analysis.
